Very Useful Gmail Features You May Have Missed Out On

in Gmail

Being a regular user of Gmail, I am always more into optimizing it through various scripts and add-ons so that I can get more out of my favorite email app. But sometimes we tend to overlook some simple features which can prove to be useful in its own way.

This is what happened that day when I was clearing my inbox and I stumbled upon 2 Gmail features which I didn’t know. So then I decided to make a list of such Gmail features which may not be too obvious to the all the Gmail users .

Geeks and advanced gmail users may already know all this but there is no harm in taking a look because you may have missed out on a feature…you never know.

1: Search Options

gmail search options

Yes, there is a small search options link beside the Search Bar at the top. And if you click on it, it further expands and gives you more options. See below :

gmail search box

Hence this can be useful to the user who is not very familiar with the search operators or one who is not good at it. This box helps you to do a comprehensive search in gmail easily .

2: Forward All

gmail forward all

Yes, you can forward an entire conversation which could be like a list of several mails. This can be quite handy at times .

3: Favorite Feeds As Web Clips

gmail web clips

Web clips are those tiny bits of information which appear above the inbox. You can customize them so that they display news or information only about those topics which you are interested in .

4: Personal Level Indicators

gmail indicators

If you go to Settings-> general-> Personal Level Indicators and turn it on then every mail which is only sent to you will have a single arrow and those which have been sent to many more people along with you , will have a double arrow beside them .

5: Filter Messages like this

gmail filters

Yes you can directly filter similar mails from the mail itself instead of separately going to settings and creating a filter. Saves a lot of time indeed .

6: Mute A Conversation

gmail mute conversationSometimes certain repeat mails don’t seem to end and you keep on getting multiple mails in the same conversation. The best way to avoid this is select that conversation and go to More Actions-> Mute. This way the mail won’t pile up in your inbox again .

7: Add an event

gmail add event

Ok, this is probably the commonest in the list. While sending a mail to someone who uses Google Calendar too, you can add him to an event directly in your calendar .

The above features might be simple and known to many but I am sure there could be a lot of gmail users who may have missed out on one or more of the above features. If you are one of them and today you have learnt something new then this post has achieved its goal .smile

hey

I’m also a very old user of gmail..however, I just checked my account and couldnt find few features that you mentioned.

1)Filter Messages like this
2)Mute A Conversation
3)Add an event

Can you explain the possible reasons for this?

Thanks

Namita I think you are still on the Older version of Gmail. Look at the top right of your gmail where you have Settings. Does it show you a link to “Older Version” ? If it doesn’t then you are on the older version. But even in the older version you should have Mute a conversation. Check Again.

Very useful list 4 a new user of Gmail like me.
Well guys, do ya know how to set high/low important priority for email of Gmail? Thanks a ton ^-^

Abhijeet 04.29.08 at 1:35 pm

Huong..I don’t think you can do that in gmail. The best way to accomplish that would be make use of the labels to sort out the emails.
