Using Trends In Google Reader To Manage RSS Overload

Google Reader,RSS 16 April 2008 | View Comments

If you use Google Reader as your rss reader and thinking about doing a cleanup of your rss feeds, then the Trends feature can be quite useful. The Trends button is on the top left of your Reader and when you click on it, it immediately displays the stats related to your rss feed reading habits .

Google Reader Trends

Now here, the 2 main boxes which we should look into are Reading Trends and Subscription Trends . In the Reading trends box, you can click on Top 40 and then analyze the feeds which you haven’t touched in many days. There is a small trash/delete button beside each feed so you can easily unsubscribe from the rss feeds of your choice .

Google ReaderThe Subscription Trends can be very useful because it has a list of Inactive feeds where it shows rss feeds which haven’t been updated since months. Hence you just need to start clicking on the delete or trash button and start unsubscribing from those inactive feeds which are just a burden in your reading list .

In fact this is not only useful for removing inactive feeds but it also has a list of frequently updated rss feeds which means that if there is a feed which is producing a huge number of posts per day then you may consider unsubscribing from that too. There is a Most obscure button too which primarily lists those feeds which have the least subscribers through Google products like Reader or iGoogle. You may check that but that may not be quite relevant .
