Although Google Reader is an amazing feed reader, there are some simple things which you may not be able to do directly in that. Like renaming a tag or folder. There’s no straight forward process to do that in Google Reader and there are some steps involved.
So lets say we have a folder named ‘ News ‘ in our reader which has 3 subscriptions and we want to rename it to ‘ Primary ‘. Here are the steps to do it :-
1. Go to Settings - > Subscription and go to the extreme right where you’ll find a search bar. Type the word ‘ News ‘ there.

2. When you type news, it automatically shows all the subscription with the ‘ News ‘ tag and also those subscriptions which may have the same word in their name or description. If you look carefully in the image below, when we searched for news, apart from showing those 3 subscriptions, it also displayed the feeds which had the word news in their name or description.

3. Now we will select the first feed under the news folder and change it through the drop down menu, to a new folder named ‘ Primary ‘.
4. Now since we have created a new folder named Primary, we just need to select the other 2 feeds under the news folder and using the ‘ More actions ‘ drop down menu in the top, add the tag ‘ Primary ‘ and remove the tag ‘ News ‘ . And we’re done !
So this was how we can rename folders or tags in Google Reader. I hope the Reader team soon comes out with a shorter process to do it.

I agree. Google has to come out with some easier way of doing it.Thanks for the tip.
Jeet,
When i read the heading of your post, I thought you are kidding. I felt “What is big deal in renaming a tag in Google Reader?”.
But when I tried renaming a tag without reading your article, I understood how tough it is
Thanks for the nice tip.
Really helped me.
I was looking out for a way of doing this and suddenly i thought of you; a real expert in Google Reader.
Hi - thanks for this tip - I have a question for you - in my Reader, I am unable to finda way of creating more folders than I already have ( I have about 10) . Is there a finite limit of some sort ? Or is it just that I am doing something totally inept ? A reply to my email would be most useful and appreciated
Tarun - There isn’t any finite number. You must be doing something wrong. Try again.
