Is Gmail Creating Problems in Firefox 3 For You Too ?

1

Jul

Since I’ve started using Firefox 3, I’ve seen an error message in Gmail which I never encountered before.  The error message usually appears when I sign in to Gmail and the problem occurs randomly.

I’ve tried disabling the Gmail Labs feature and also using a fresh Firefox profile. However it hasn’t helped and the error message appears at least once in a day and then when later in the day I sign in again, it’s taken care of automatically. Here’s the error message :-

gmail-error

This definitely has something to do with Firefox 3 because I’ve checked in other browsers and it doesn’t appear there.

Have you encountered such an error in your Gmail ? Let me know in the comments.

    @Arpit- I think it could be a Firefox 3 bug .

I remember Gmail had issues in FF3 Beta 2. Probably one of the bugs is back.

Just the opposite for me. In Fx 2, I constantly had to use basic mode in Gmail to login. Fx 3 = no problems.

I have had Firefox close down for no reason when I have Gmail and Foxy Tunes application running simultaneously. I uninstalled Firefox 3 and reinstalled it but it is still there. Has anybody else also faced the same problem. It has to be Firefox 3 because I never had this problem with Firefox 2. But then I wasnt using Foxy Tunes with Firefox 2. Any solutions?

I had another problem with GMail and FF3: FF often crashes when I close tab with GMail. This occured to me with Release Candidates and final releases at first, so I’ve started to use Prism - there was no problems with it. I think this was the problem in my computer - now I use another PC and have no such problems. But still FF3 periodically crashes for me.

and I was so happy with FF2. IE would always crash and I was happy to start using FF2. But FF3 certainly has some issues which havent been dealt with. I think some of their add-ons especially Foxy Tunes does do not gel very well. Is there a solution?

@Sarah- Not sure. Could be a firefox 3 bug. You can post the problem here- http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/

Has FF3 admin responded to this problem. It seems to be so widespread.

Can’t get Gmail to load properly. All contacts get listed as UNDEFINED. Disabled extensions, deleted cache/cookies, works fine in Basic Mode. Frustrating to have to switch browsers to read email.

Zohar- I was probably playing with fire, but I blindly went into Firefox profile folder and deleted anything that looked like it was related to GMail. Fixed the problem after a week of having to use Opera. Sorry I can’t be more specific- I didn’t jot down what I deleted.

    Thank you Parker.

As I am using mac OSX-4 i have no idea how to do that…any suggestions?

  • Parker

    Mac OS:

Each profile is stored on your hard drive in a profile folder. The default location of the Firefox profile is ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/.

    * xxxxxxxx represents a random string of 8 characters.

    1. Open Finder and go to your home folder. Note: your home folder is usually the name of your Mac user account
    2. From your home folder open /Library/, then /Application Support/, then /Firefox/, then /Profiles/.
    3. Open your profile folder. By default, it is /xxxxxxxx.default/ where xxxxxxxx represents a random string of 8 characters.

    Good luck.

i suggest for those of you who have trouble accessing gmail on firefox 3 and have not found a solution yet, try MINEFIELD which is a nightly build/developer’s version of firefox 3. it is currently in the pre-alpha stage of firefox 3.1 but it feels pretty stable to me. has NEVER crashed eversince i installed it. i guess they sort of fixed that gmail bug on the nightly builds of firefox.

best of all, you still enjoy the firefox experience!

here’s the link to minefield download section from mozilla:

    http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

look for the EXE file type if you’re on windows.

    good luck!

Mikkel- try deleting the following from your Firefox profile, this has worked for many people:

    “gmanager”, “gm_scripts”, and “gm_scripts_08bak”

My personal problem was with Customize Google. I’ve had Customize Google and gmail both installed and this crashed my FireFox.

I set up Customize Google just to hide the ads and nothing else, and now it doesn’t crash anymore.

the minefield was a great suggestion . . . for about 2 hours. can’t figure out what is causing all this

  • rogel

nope. but ff2 “remembers me on this computer.” ff3 simply doesn’t, no matter how many times i click the box. and not just on gmail but on all other websites requiring login but allowing “remember me.”

Firefox has always had problems, but quite a few of you are having more trouble than you should have to deal with. I would suggest you start Firefox over again from scratch.

To do a really nice install and set up say a couple of dozen add-ons, maybe more, might take an hour or half a day, depending on what you like. I would do this only if you are in the right mood. If you feel irritable or you’re in a hurry, leave it for another time.

Hopefully you have several internet browsers, but you might want to bring down a new install file for Firefox and save it handy someplace, before you get rid of your old FF install.

I suggest wiping out your profile, which is in equivalent but different places in XP and Vista. I’d uninstall Firefox. And after getting rid of all that, I’d clean the registry (I like RegSeeker myself; there are a few). Then I might get TuneUp Utilities to scan for anything not quite right and to do a defrag if required. I’d also use CCleaner to help out.

When all seemed well, I’d restart the computer.

(At this point, you might have a fairly clean system. As a by-the-way, it would be a good time to try NTRegOpt and ERUNT, which you really should be using. Yes, they work on Vista too IF you take off your UAC.)

Now install your new Firefox which will have to make a new profile (seeing as you wiped off your old profile). You’ll have to set up everything from scratch. Leave any edgy extensions, such as Gmail Space, to the end. You want to set up a very nice, conservative, good-working system with no glitches.

If you think you have the best Firefox you’ve ever had, you can save the whole shmeer to a faraway place, such as a DVD. Just copy the entire profile and also the entire Firefox program as it is set up. Depending what you have, you might or might not have to re-install FF right over the top, but usually after “a little housekeeping” it will restore things beautifully. Yes, you can put it onto another computer that way.

When you like what you see, you can add in anything that you thought might be causing your problems.

I wish I could say that you won’t HAVE any problems, but the nature of Firefox will always be to take things to the limit, and so there will never be a time when FF works perfectly for very long.

More savvy folk love K-Meleon, and repair folk often have a copy of OffByOne ready to work at any time. (OffByOne comes up so fast that it’s a way of checking an internet connection, too.) If you like Firefox for its myriad add-ons, however, it has no equivalent. In their own ways, both Opera and K-M are as good or better, but only insofar as apples are as good or better than oranges.

    Good luck.
