What is Chilirec ?
Chilirec is an online Internet Radio Recorder which can record more than 350 internet radio stations, thus resulting in a huge personal collection of online mp3 songs. This is a new player in the market and has already been featured in sites like Life Hacker and Download Squad.
However I found that some excellent features of Chilirec were not highlighted in a proper manner and hence I decided to use Chilirec for 3 days and then list its merits and demerits based on my personal usage of this application.
Its Different

No doubt recording of Internet radio is not a new concept and there are already some players in the market. However Chilirec is a different because it is completely online and doesn’t require you to download any software and also it helps you to access your playlists and collection from any computer which has internet. There are many more merits which I have listed in this post. Read on.
How does it work ?
Its pretty simple. Go to chilirec.com and register for a free account. It will work even without registration but I’ll suggest you to register for personalization and so that you can access your mp3 collection from any computer.
Once you get into your account, it starts recording the radio stations which it will show you on the right sidebar. Give it some time and you will find that it has already recorded huge number of songs. Then you can start playing your favorite songs. And the recording continues in the background, thereby adding more songs to your collection.
Merits
1: No Download Required
Yes, this is a cool advantage. Its completely online and you don’t need to download another big software to listen to the songs.
2: Awesome Search Function
Chilirec has a search bar at the top which lets you search for the song, band, artist or the radio station. Its pretty effective and you don’t need to browse through the long list to find your favorite song. Just type it in the search bar and hit enter.
3: Recording Happens Even When Computer is Off
Yes, once the recording of the radio stations starts in your account, it doesn’t matter if you log off or turn off the computer. The recording continues at the back end and the songs keep on increasing.
4: Access from anywhere
No matter where you are in the world, you just need the internet to go to chilirec.com and log in to your account and there you are. You get your entire collection and playlists right there. Nothing is lost. And its not like other services, for example Pandora , which is geo-targeted and cannot be used in every country.
5: A Huge Collection of Songs
Last time when I checked, it had already recorded and stored 206830 songs !!
So I believe if this goes on for a few days, I’ll have almost every song in my chilirec account. Cool, isn’t it ?
6: You have the control over existing radio stations
Although you cannot add your own stations but you can certainly choose which stations you want to record and which you don’t, by going to My Recorder in the left sidebar of your chilirec account. You can also stop the recording of songs from there.
7: You Can DOWNLOAD Songs too !!
This is what you were waiting for, isn’t it ? Well, then yes you can actually download individual mp3 songs to your computer from chilirec.
You just need to click on the small icon beside each song and save it on your computer. And you now have your favorite songs on your computer
But remember that first you should let the song play completely in the chilirec palyer and then download it.
8: Its FREE
Last but not the least, its free to use ! So many songs, so many mp3s…completely free!
Demerits
1: You Cannot Add Your Own Station
Yes, this is one of the drawbacks of Chilirec. You cannot add your own radio stations. However if your aim is to get your favorite songs/mp3s then this won’t matter to you.
2: Audio breaks sometimes
Although this seems to happen rarely, the audio tends to break in some songs. But you can expect this from a new app. But overall Chilirec delivers a fantastic performance.
Conclusion
This is a MUST try for all you music lovers out there. Its an excellent source of free mp3 music, online and offline.
Disclaimer: As chilirec says: ” Chilirec is a recording device intended for recording of radio stations. It is for personal use only. File sharing or distribution of recorded material is prohibited. ”

not sure that the songs recorded counter is valid. i scaled down on the number of stations so that i could see the songs listed for each selected station, and though my counter says 10,000 plus, i can only see 100 odd songs listed. but then, it is a neat app, and i just used it for a day, it sure is worth a run.
This is pretty cool! Much easier than downloading toolbars or add-ons to record radio stations. Will definitely be giving it a shot! Thanks!
